Amazing Stories - Spielberg series eyed for DVD release
Posted by David Lambert

Some of our readers have already seen the Miami Vice, Bionic Woman, and Dream On news stories that were posted at TVShowsOnDVD in the last couple of days. For those of you who haven't seen those, we need to explain where the story that follows comes from.

Universal has sent out a very nicely crafted book, approximately 35-40 glossy pages long and in full color. The outer cover and first couple of pages is stark black, with silver lettering, that says "Great Television on DVD is Universal. Universal Studios Home Video is Proud To Present Some of the Most Dynamic and Influential Television Shows of the Past 40 Years. The ShowsThat Defined Generations, Influenced Popular Culture and Set the Standard for Television's Most Groundbreaking Programming are Coming to DVD."

The way that is worded, it leaves little doubt in our minds that every television show covered inside is planned for a DVD release in the not-too-distant future. And there are a large number of shows in there. Some are featured prominently, with entire pages to themselves. One such property that is mentioned on a full page is this long-awaited Emmy-winning Steven Spielberg show:

Amazing Stories had a great run, albeit short: it ran for just a couple of seasons. But amazing (forgive the pun) guest stars and cameo appearances included the likes of Drew Barrymore, Amy Irving, Bronson Pinchot, Kevin Costner, Kiefer Sutherland, Gregory Hines, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Dom DeLuise, Loni Anderson, Charles Durning, Gordon Jump, Charles Nelson Reilly, Richard Simmons, Dirk Benedict, Gary Coleman, Ed McMahon, Harvey Keitel, Sondra Locke, Beau Bridges, Seth Green, Charlie Sheen, James Cromwell, Joe Pantoliano, Forest Whitaker, Mark Hamill, and...whew! That's where we stop! Many, many more than that! And don't forget the cool-at-the-time CGI sequence at the opening, something that was new to television in that era. Throw in John Williams' great theme song, and you've got something worth owning. Fans of Family Dog will also want to eye this possible release, as that series' "pilot" was part of the second season.

So when do we get to own it? What's the release date? What extras are on there? Is this going to be a best-of, or in season sets? Well, none of that info is in the brochure! We've posted a scan of the one and only page that mentioned this show, and all the other shows in the booklet are similar. Nothing in this document has info about what a DVD would be like for any of the shows mentioned, or how soon we would see them. In the end, it's just a collection of pretty pictures about a lot of Universal's properties...the ones they WANT to put on DVD. Bear in mind that not all known upcoming DVD releases from the studio are included in the booklet. Also, just because it's in the booklet now, doesn't mean that plans can't change. These are long-range plans, and nothing's set in stone. They could be as far away as a year...or more!

But it's good to know that Amazing Stories is "on the radar", and we here will keep our ears open for more news. As soon as updates are available, we'll be sure to bring them to you lickity-split!

Amazing Stories - Is this the new date after its postponement from last year?

The folks at The Sci Fi Channel run a great website. Not only does it cover and promote shows and events tied to the cable network, but it truly reaches out to science fiction fans with genre-related info that may not be directly related to their broadcasts. One of the cool things at their site along those lines is the Events Calendar. It lists dates for SciFi channel events like premieres of special shows and so forth, but also lists film openings, convention dates, book releases...and now DVD release dates as well, it seems.

Many of the DVD's you'll find on their master list are for releases we've already talked about, including the dates of all four seasons of Enterprise. The big surprise, though, are some end-of-the-year release dates for 5 highly anticipated sets from Univesal Studios Home Video!

Amazing Stories - Season 1 is one of those titles, after being delayed from a 2004 release, and the SciFi.com events calendar is reporting a new 11/22/2005 release date for it!

We tried to get Universal to comment on this, but they would neither confirm nor deny that schedule. What came up is that, if this DID represent the current plans for that set's release, we have to realize that plans can always change. Nothing that far off is set in stone, and we think our readers here at TVShowsOnDVD are among the best on the 'Net at realizing that. Still, it's good to know that it's that much on the radar, and even if that doesn't turn out to be the exact date, it seems to be coming!

Our thanks to two readers who tipped us off to these items being on the schedule: Michael Dormany and Jason Shanker. Stay tuned, and we'll keep you posted about this title, and the others on that listing, as soon as we hear more!
