Talk about your lifestyles of the rich and bitchy! Well, it's a lesser level of bitchy in the first Alexis-less season, as John Forsythe ("Blake Carrington") and Linda Evans ("Krystle Carrington") get married and rule Denver high society with all their oil-earned riches. Dynasty - Season 1 DVDs will arrive in stores on April 19th courtesy of Fox. Note that Pamela Sue Martin ("Fallon") was also in the cast at this point, among others, but "Alexis" (Joan Collins) and "Sammy Jo" (Heather Locklear) didn't join the cast of characters in this nighttime soap until the second season.

Video will be the orginal 1.33:1, and audio is in Dolby Stereo for English, French, and Spanish. SRP is $39.98 in the USA and $54.98 in Canada. Running 716 minutes, it looks like the correct episode count is "15", because the contents list provided by Fox seems to indicate that the triple-length pilot episode "Oil" (which was the original title of this show designed to steal Dallas's thunder) is spilt into three parts and broken onto two sides of a double-sided disc, and the double-length episode that orginally aired on March 2, 1981 is on the same side of the same disc, but seems to be broken into the separate episodes "Krystle's Lie" and "The Necklace", which is how it appears in syndication. Fox Home Entertainment has announced the first season of Dynasty which stars John Forsythe, Joan Collins, Heather Locklear and Linda Evans. The four-disc set will be available to own from the 19th April, and should retail at around $39.98. Each of the episodes will be presented in 1.33:1 full frame along with English, Spanish and French Dolby Surround tracks. Extras will include a commentary by Esther Shapiro on episode "Oil" Part 1 and Part 2, another commentary by Esther Shapiro, Al Corley and Pamela Sue Martin on episode "The Testimony", a Dynasty Overview feature, a Family Tree for Pamela, a Al Corley profile, a Sue Martin Profile and some outtakes. Dynasty - 1st Season Cover with Blake, Krystle...and ???

It's been almost a month since we revealed all the details for Dynasty - The Complete 1st Season, a set of 4 double-sided DVDs that hits stores on April 19th. Now we finally have the cover art to share with you as well.

We've had some people challenge our statement in the previous news post that Joan Collins ("Alexis") didn't appear in the first season. Shame on you all; you must have missed the recent documentary telefilm Dynasty: The Making of a Guilty Pleasure. It was a satisfactory telling of the stories that went on behind-the-scenes of the classic primetime soap opera. In it, it shows in a straightforward way the accurate depiction of how, near the end of the first season, the producers/writers were pressured to introduce a new character to help boost the ratings, and target rival primetime soap Dallas. They grabbed onto the idea of Blake Carrington's ex-wife, who was initially called "Madeline", coming in and basically being "a female J.R."

For the role of Blake's bitchy ex, the folks behind the show wanted to cast a big-name, well-known female star. Those considered for the role included Elizabeth Taylor, Raquel Welch, and Sophia Loren. They obviously didn't take it, though, and with the end of the season approaching they latched onto the gimmick of showing a veiled lady entering the courtroom at the last moment, and freeze-framing the shot there for the cliffhanger. In the off-season, Joan Collins was finally hired, and formally introduced in the 2nd-season opener, "Enter Alexis".

Whew! Sorry for the history lesson, but now you understand why the lady on the left is hidden by her hat and veil. Joan's character, as well as that of Heather Locklear's "Sammy Jo", show up full throttle in the next DVD release. But before we get to that, we have to get started with the Carrington clan in Dynasty - The Complete 1st Season. Here's the box you'll look for on store shelves this coming April:
