Beverly Hills, 90210 - Wall Street Journal: Paramount To Release 90210 DVDs!

Waaaay back in December 2003 (well over a year ago), we posted a story about Beverly Hills, 90210 being a property whose rights were slated to transfer from one company (Lions Gate/Artisan) to another company (Paramount) during 2005. Due to that, we told you, Lions Gate had no time to release season sets of the series, and instead they settled for cashing in on a DVD of The Pilot Episode, and leaving the season set releases to the other studio. Many fans picked up that disc to tide us over, but we're all waiting for season sets...and now it seems that Paramount may be ready to bring them on!

Yesterday's edition of The Wall Street Journal (2/23/05, Section B) had a story by Merissa Marr and Joe Flint entitled "DVDs Are Finally Paramount". The article explains that previous management figures had a strategy of bringing titles - film and TV based - to DVD in a slow and steady fashion, and that new management in place now has a different plan of increasing the studio's revenue by way of cutting loose on the library.

Much of this has been reported already, at the time that the executives did their shuffle in recent months, and it wasn't exactly news we could use here at TVShowsOnDVD because no actual titles were brought up. But the Wall Street Journal story is naming names!

Mentioned in the story are a number of shows that Paramount intends to release in the near future, in order to drive their profits and therefore the stock value at parent Viacom. Beverly Hills, 90210 is mentioned as being among the titles they are planning to release, albeit later than some of the others talked aout in the story. Also mentioned was spin-off show Melrose Place!

Nothing along the lines of a timeline was given, though, nor any other details. We're not even sure these will be box sets (but we assume so, since that's Paramount's normal release pattern). We're very happy here to know that something's in the works for this series. Like many of you, I was hopelessly addicted to the show when Fox Network aired it, and we all are waiting to catch this on DVD now. Stay tuned, and we'll fill you in on developments as they happen!

Beverly Hills, 90210 - Come Home - At Last! - To Beverly Hills, 90210 This November! ! !

For a year-and-a-half, we've known it was coming. When Paramount teased us earlier this year with indications that it was coming, TVShowsOnDVD began asking them on a pretty-much weekly basis what the street date was. We last asked the studio about this last Monday (the 17th), and were told that there still wasn't a US date for the show. But now, Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed:

Beverly Hills, 90210 -
The Complete 1st Season

NOVEMBER 7th

Although the pilot episodes came to DVD two years ago, fans have been clamoring for season sets of this landmark primetime soap opera! Shannen Doherty (Charmed), Jason Priestley (Tru Calling), Luke Perry (Windfall), Gabrielle Carteris (Palmetto Pointe), Tori Spelling (So NoTORIous), Ian Ziering (upcoming Biker Mice From Mars), Brian Austin Green (Freddie), Jennie Garth (What I Like About You), James Eckhouse (upcoming 2006 film Half-Life), Carol Potter, Douglas Emerson and Joe E. Tata star in the initial season of the series, where the action mainly takes place at West Beverly Hills High School with new kids Brandon and Brenda Walsh moving into the upscale neighborhood, and making lots of new friends.

You would think with that zip code, there would be a ton of guest stars in the first season of this show. But really there weren't. But you will be able to spot upcoming Friends star Matthew Perry, singer Debbie Gibson, and even '80s Playboy playmate Julie McCullough among these 22 episodes.

Beverly Hills, 90210 - The Complete 1st Season will be a 6-DVD set that runs 17 hours and 48 minutes. Please stand by for extras (if any) and box art! Melrose Place - The Complete 1st Season has been announced for the same release date of November 7th, and we've heard that the long-awaited Twin Peaks - Season 2 will hit US shores a couple of weeks after that.
Beverly Hills, 90210 - Darren Star Commentaries Among The Extras On 90210's Complete 1st Season!

We have some news on the extras for the first season of Beverly Hills, 90210 thanks to a recent update at Amazon.com. The popular retailer lists the following special features:

* Commentary by Creator Darren Star on select episodes
* All 22 episodes from the 1990-91 season on 6 discs
* Interactive featurette
* Season 1 episode recaps

90210 creator Darren Star went on, of course, to create and produce other shows, such as Melrose Place, Sex and the City and the primetime soap genre-busting Grosse Pointe. It will be interesting to hear his comments on these episodes.

There are more special features on the 90210 DVDs than Melrose Place. The studio appears to be bundling the first seasons of Melrose Place and Beverly Hills, 90210 together in a set called "The Good, the Bad & the Beautiful Pack." Amazon is selling this for $89.00, which is more than buying the sets individually; $36.99 for Melrose Place and $35.87 for 90210. We'll do some digging around to find out if there's anything different with this set - it contains 14 discs, which is the same as buying the two sets together (8 for Melrose and 6 for 90210).

Beverly Hills, 90210 - Trade Mag Reports That Some Tunes Will Be Replaced

Jessica Wolf is reporting at the trade mag Home Media Retailing that the upcoming November 7th DVD release of Beverly Hills 90210 - The Complete 1st Season, along with spin-off Melrose Place on the same day, will each incur some music replacement:

Fans of the two shows, both Aaron Spelling productions, have been eager for a DVD release since the TV DVD market exploded. But both of the popular 1990s series, especially "90210" featured notable musical hits from the era, and music clearance for DVD releases for shows such as this are fraught with costly negotiations.

Like many other shows with strong pop-culture soundtracks, such as "Felicity," some music for the episodes included on these discs will be replaced with new tracks, according to a Paramount spokesperson.

That was done to prevent more delays in getting the DVD sets out, according to Paramount. The studio hired one of Spelling's former music supervisors to help substitute some music.

Unfortunate, but it's good that we know this in advance, and it's good that the studio went back to the folks who were possibly involved in the original music selection to come up with suitable substitutions. Read the HMR story for more info. Our thanks to reader "Mark" for the heads-up about that article.

Nadie sabe nada de la Región 4??? :?
La página y el último folleto que vienen en algunos títulos de Paramount aún no anuncian nada de esta serie.
Parece que en los próximos meses saldría en México la R4, ya lo anuncia la web de Paramount.
