Sony have posted their annual financial statement with details of their shipments for the year. They have shipped 4.6m Blu-ray players, 1m Blu-ray recorders (mostly in Japan) and 14.3m PS3s, for a total of 19.9m Blu-ray capable devices for the year.

In the same report Sony have put up their forecast for the year ending March 31st 2012. They have predicted that sales of Blu-ray players and recorders will be 10m combined and 15m PS3s will be sold. They have also predicted a rise in sales of LCD TVs from 22.4m last year to 27m this year. No detail is yet available for the number of 3D sets they expect to ship.

Sony as a company have posted a $3.2 billion loss for the year, but this was due to a massive $4.4 billion accounting charge taken against some deferred tax assets. Operating profit for the year came in at around $2.5 billion.

Sony expect to take in a similar amount next year due to a rise in sales and profit margin that will be offset by losses from the earthquake and tsunami. They also expect research and development expenses to increase by nearly 8% for the year which some have speculated is related to PS4 development costs.

All in all, it is probably a year Sony want to forget given the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami as well as the unauthorised intrusions into the PlayStation Network. Charges for the coming year are rated at $1.85 billion for the earthquake and $170m for the intrusion.
