Grindhouse or Grind House?
Pic to be split in two abroad.
by IGN Staff
February 21, 2007 - The brilliance of the Grindhouse concept is that the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino film is meant to be an ode to the old schlock double-features that the filmmakers remember as kids, the kind of Saturday-afternoon movie-going experience that doesn't exist anymore. Two crappy movies for the price of one, complete with messed-up trailers for messed-up exploitation flicks. It's a great premise, but now it seems as though Grindhouse is actually going to be split into two films for release internationally.
The movie, which consists of two "features" (Tarantino's Death Proof and Rodriguez's Planet Terror), will, according to Variety, be released in non-English-speaking territories as two separate films. The idea behind this move by the Weinstein Co. is that the "double-bill concept is alien to many filmgoers around the world." It's not exactly a fresh notion to the younger audiences in the U.S. either, but apparently the picture will be released as is here and in some other English-speaking territories nonetheless.
Additional footage will be added to the "split" versions of each feature, presumably to increase the running time of each. In that form they will be titled Grindhouse: Planet Terror and Grindhouse: Death Proof, and there will be a three- to five-month gap between each film's release. No word yet on which will come out first, or how the fake trailers will be handled in this form (they'll reside between the two features in the U.S. release).
