Starz Ends Netflix Deal
Posted September 2, 2011 01:11 AM by Webmaster
Earlier today, Starz Entertainment announced that it won't renew its streaming deal with Netflix. As a result, after the current deal expires in February 28, 2012, the Los Gatos, California-based company will no longer have access to content from the major studios, including Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
According to Starz Chief Executive Officer Chris Albrecht, the company would like to protect the "premium nature of our brand."
Tony Wible, an analyst at Janney Montgomery Scott, commented that "Starz is what made Netflix's streaming initially -- this could be its downfall" and concluded that the lack of premium content could cost the company subscribers.
Netflix's stock fell 9%, $19.97 to $213.30, in after-hours trading, after the announcement about the end of the Starz deal was made
