The Amazing Spider-Man
Total Recall (2012)
Spider-man
Cita:Though far from the night and day difference that some might be hoping for, this new "Mastered in 4K" transfer is indeed an improvement over the previous release.
Cita:Compared to the old release, this new transfer provides a slightly more natural, filmic, and sharp image. While these improvements can be seen in the included screenshot comparisons, I must stress that when I was actually flipping between the two sources on my HDTV, the differences were fairly subtle and, in some cases, nearly undetectable. This is a technically stronger video presentation, but it doesn't quite offer the type of significant upgrade that other remastered discs have provided in the past ('The Terminator,' for instance).
The Amazing Spider-Man
Cita:With the exception of the small increase in sharpness and contrast and some slight differences in framing, this transfer is virtually identical to the last already reference quality disc.
Cita:This "Mastered in 4K" disc from Sony offers a higher bitrate transfer, but outside of screenshot comparisons, I found the differences to be nearly invisible under normal viewing conditions. The audio track from the last release has been preserved here and it's still fantastic. Unfortunately, none of the extras have been ported over and there is no 3D option. Those who own large projector screens or actual 4K displays might find some value in the slight improvements here, but for most, there really is no need to double dip.
Total Recall (2012)
Cita:Last year's 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode was already a squeaky-clean and dashing demo-worthy presentation, lens-flare galore and oozing in teal & orange. This supposed new video down-converted from a 2160p master yields no discernible difference, unless we were to scrutinize down to the most minuscule and negligible facet of each frame. But as it stands, definition and clarity is razor-sharp and distinct, from the smallest lines in the bizarre architecture of the Colony to the tiniest imperfection on the magnetic highway in the UFB skyline. Facial complexions, especially in close-ups, are revealing with lifelike textures, pores and trivial blemishes.
