Después de que el amigo de todos los niños, Mike Eisner rompió relaciones con Pixar, se quedó con que Disney se quedaba con la posibilidad de sacar secuelas de las películas que desarrollo Pixar bajo su tutela...

Mucho se había rumorado acerca de TS3, pero parece que ya empiezan a calentarse motores (aunque a ver si dichos motores funcionan sin el combustible que suministraba Pixar y en especial Jonh Lasseter)

Walt Disney Co. studio chief Dick Cook said Friday he was leaning toward making the third installment of ”Toy Story,” Pixar Animation Studios Inc.’s 1995 hit, as a feature movie rather than a straight-to-home video project in a few years.

Pixar and Disney plan to part ways after two more films together, but Disney retains the rights to make the sequels to the movies they have already produced, including the two “Toy Story” movies.

Pixar, which has said sequel rights were a sore point that helped torpedo contract extension talks, could take part in ”Toy Story 3” but has said it was unlikely to do so.

“My hunch is big screen,” Dick Cook, the studio chairman, told Reuters in an interview. But he said that no decision had been made and that the movie was a few years or more away.

“We are nowhere on it right now,” he said.

Disney’s sequel to its own hit “The Lion King” went straight to video and DVD this year. DVD sequels work well for studios that can build on a household name without major investments, but Cook said the “Toy Story” sequel was worth a bigger release.

“I think it deserves it. These are two of the most beloved characters in the last generation. Buzz and Woody are fantastic characters, and I think that is something that would fit on the big screen nicely.”

Cook was in San Antonio, Texas to promote “The Alamo,” which debuts April 9.

Disney hopes the historical adventure, which cost just under $100 million to make, will prove to be a hit with audiences after the studio delayed it from a planned year-end release.

Dificilmente van a echar a perder lo que hizo Pixar, lo que si va a pasar es que le van a dar al traste a los personakes de Toy Story con una historía insulsa y además que la tecnica de animación no se le va a acercar en nada, si hace eso Disney estará dando pie a que mucho público los empiece a abandonar.

I've been talking about this for months. Finally it looks like the deal is done and the director has been chosen... continued...

As far as I can tell, there still has not been a public announcement. So I guess this is an exclusive! haha The new director is the same one I've been referring to since before Thanksgiving. Why haven't I said his name yet? Honestly, I didn't want to speak to soon and illicit bad feelings from anyone in case it didn't happen.

The new director of Toy Story 3 is Bradley Raymond. Brad has directed several DTV movies for Disney. Someone that Disney management respects and has wanted to do this project since long ago. I'd like to wish Brad luck with the project, I hope it turns out wonderful.


Previously in another blog, I mentioned that a co-director was picked and it was a previous Pixar employee. As it turns out, this would-be co-director walked away after a few issues arose. I won't go into reasons why he dropped out, but it probably was not for reasons that would first come to your mind. Brad will serve as the one and only director on this film.


So there you have it. Finally, months after originally talking about this, the director has started on the project.

But proceeding with the project could doom any future talks with Pixar.

As Robert Iger, the newly appointed chief executive of the Walt Disney Co., seeks to repair the company's foundering relationship with Pixar Animation Studios, he could face one key obstacle: Pixaren't.

That's what animators have dubbed a nondescript white warehouse in Glendale, Calif., that Disney has recently transformed into a factory to produce sequels to Pixar movies, including Toy Story, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc.

Under the companies' existing partnership, which expires with the release of Cars in 2006, Disney has a right to make sequels to all the Pixar movies. Still, Disney's decision to exercise that right is controversial.

As the entertainment giant ramps up its new Pixar sequel division, which is already gearing up for Toy Story 3, some think it could hinder Iger's efforts to make peace with Pixar chief Steve Jobs.

"It does muddy the waters for creating some sort of deal," said Tom Sito, president emeritus of Hollywood's local animation guild and a former Disney animator. "Pixar has very jealously guarded the integrity of their creative properties and are loath to trust them to others who are more economy-minded. It's like somebody else taking your children to school."

Jobs abruptly ended talks to renew Pixar's distribution deal with Disney over a year ago, when the two sides couldn't agree on financial terms. He has repeatedly said that despite the huge success of Toy Story 2, his company shuns sequels in favor of making original stories.

Pixar -- the market leader in animation -- just had its sixth consecutive hit with The Incredibles.

But unless Pixar reteams with Disney and opts to make the sequels itself, Disney can move forward alone -- though it must pay Pixar royalties on any project it makes.

Officials from both Disney and Pixar would not comment. But according to several sources close to Jobs and Pixar's creative guru John Lasseter, the two men are deeply unhappy about Disney's new venture, which will eventually employ up to 250 people for Toy Story 3 alone.

In animation circles, the Pixar sequel unit is being seen by some as an affront to the creative process.

Chris Wedge, the director of 20th Century Fox's new hit movie Robots, who has known Lasseter for more than 20 years, called Disney's move to piggyback on Pixar's creativity "misguided and depressing."

Currently, about 40 people are at work on the unit's first film: Toy Story 3. Disney has a script it likes and is in talks with a director and a producer: Bradley Raymond, who directed Disney's direct-to-video Lion King 11/2, and Roy Conli, who produced Treasure Planet and The Hunch Back of Notre Dame.

One thing Disney doesn't have -- at least not yet -- is a commitment from Tom Hanks and Tim Allen to reprise their voice-over roles as Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Disney has yet to approach the pair.

Production of Toy Story 3, which follows the adventures of Buzz after he is recalled to the Taiwan factory where he was built, is expected to begin next year for release in 2008.

Although other Hollywood studios have courted Pixar as a potential distribution partner, Jobs has not entered into serious negotiations with any of them. He has indicated that he could be enticed to reopen talks with Disney once Michael Eisner, the current chief executive with whom he has clashed publicly, steps down. This week, Disney announced that Eisner will turn over the reins to Iger on Sept. 30, and Iger has said he plans to reach out to Jobs.

Some speculate that the formation of the Pixar sequel unit was designed in part to give Disney more leverage.

But sources close to the studio say Disney executives are simply planning for a post-Pixar future. Making sequels to such enormously popular movies just makes good business sense.

Yo creo que la dignidad de los Ejecutivos de Pixar no esta en cuestionamiento, y no creo que lleguen a algún acuerdo con Disney en esta tercera parte de Toy Story, lo que yo espero es que tanto Tom Hanks y Tim Allen tengan tantita ética y se nieguen a prestar sus voces para esta nueva secuela en un acto de congruencia.

Como quiera que sea para mí cualquier secuela que Disney pretenda realizar de las películas de Pixar sin Pixar esta vetada de antemano y no la pienso ir a ver al cine y mucho menos comprarla en el formato casero que prevalezca en ese momento, he dicho.

Tim Allen, como muchas veces le ha dado de comer Disney, dudo que ponga muchos peros... en cuanto a Tom Hanks, alguna vez dijo que no iba a participar si no participaba Pixar... ojalá y mantenga esta decisión (ya sabemos que con $$ baila el perro)

Creo que el punto no es ése sino que no importando quien es la casa productora ó si es buena o no, si al final tiene 2 ó 3 chistes buenos, recauda millones y trae 1000 extras, van a ser "compras segurísimas". Ahí tienen los ejemplos actuales de "Fantastic Four y La guerra de los mundos son malísimas, pero estan reentretenidotas y cuando salgan en megaedicion ultraespecial con dts van a ser compra segura"...

Ay rominito tampoco me hables tan feo pero bueno, al fin y al cabo creo que si cada quien hace de su culo (y su dinero) un papalote, pero bueno, mi mensaje anterior es de libre interpretación y no cambio mi opinión respecto a eso: Lo que dije es considerar un poco más antes de hacer una compra NO IMPORTA si es Ciudadano Kane ó Loca academia de pilotos, claro que cada quien sus gustos, pero si considerar si DE VERDAD merece la pena la inversión del filme en si y no nada más si esta bonita la caja o trae 300 documentales.

No quise hablar feo, pero creo que puedes herir susceptibilidades de la gente a la que realmente le gusta el cine mainstream, y le gusta mucho. Conozco infinidad de gente que compra las de Van Damme, Steven Segal, las de las Locas Academias y son felices y no aguantarian jamás ver una pelicula de Kurosawa o Fellini. En realidad importa que sean las voces originales? aqui yo leo que ven las peliculas dobladas y les vale madre. Incluso maman a los doblajes y los catalogan de muy buenos, excelentes, etc... "ojala que x traiga doblaje en espaniol"
